NaNoWriMo In October?

I talk about NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) at least once a year. Normally, this awesome event, where I try to write 50,000 words in 30 days, takes place in November. But, that never works well for me. November always ends up being crazy, what with William’s birthday and Thanksgiving and traveling, plus there’s always some sickness sweeping through the house at that time of year. I’ve only “completed” NaNo once or twice, and both times, I kind of, sort of, cheated. Soooo, yeah…

To change things up a bit I thought I’d do a personal NaNo type thing for October. The goal is to just get me writing everyday. So I’m not going to try for 50,000 words in a month, instead I’m setting the bar really low at 30,000. If you do the math, 30,000/31 is about 968 words/day. That sounds a little easier to manage than 1667 words/day.

So my plan is to start working on my new Dragon WIP on Oct. 1. I will count those words and the words I write for my blog in my total word count. I guess this month will be less about writing an entire novel and more about making the time to sit down and write every day.

So… Can I really call it NaNoWriMo? What about National Writing Daily Month? NaWriDaMo? If you say it with a lot of excitement it sounds like Geronimo! I like it 🙂 It’s all about those baby steps sometimes.

I’ve drawn out this cute little tracker in my Bullet Journal for NaWriDaMo. I’ve done one of these in the past but I figured I should have a fresh one for this new little project. If all goes well I’ll write a lot more than 30,000 words by the end of the month. It’s a game now to see how quickly I can get to 30,000.

That’s the plan for October. This way I’ll actually have something worth saying in my Writing section of WoRd PoW for the next month.

Feel free to join me on this little adventure! It’s always better to do stuff with friends. 🙂

Thanks for dropping by!

Wednesday WoRd PoW

Wednesday WoRd PoW

Welcome to the new weekly installment for my blog! WoRd PoW stands for Writing, Reading, Doing, Playing, and Watching. The D isn’t capitalized because sometimes there’s isn’t much else going on in my life that isn’t one of the other four.

Once a week I will post about the things I’m currently into. What I’m working on in my writing, what book I’m reading or just finished, what games I’m playing, and shows/movies I’m watching.

I’m really excited to do this, and I’d love to know what your WoRd PoW of the week is. I’m always looking for new things to do. 🙂

So this week in Writing: This is the last week of CampNaNo. It did not go well this month. There were two birthdays and a surgery over the last four weeks. NaNo always falls at a busy time for me. Camp will happen again in June, but that month will be super busy as well, so I won’t be participating. I added about 5000 words to my Work In Progress and that was it. Not great, but every word helps. I plan on doing better in the weeks to come so I’ll have weekly word count updates here.

Find me on Instagram!

Reading: I’m finishing up The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett. It’s been a slow read, not because it isn’t good, I’m just easily distracted and there are parts that I just wasn’t into. It’s a very funny book and I’ll probably have to reread it and the previous book, The Color of Magic to appreciate it more. I’m positive I’ll finish the rest of the series this year.

Doing: My youngest turned four this month and it’s hit me that I still treat him like a baby. It’s a common failing among mothers, we just don’t want them to grow up and become annoying teenagers. 😀 So I’ve started the process of transitioning him from a sippy cup to a regular cup and soon we’ll begin potty training. Just yesterday I found this great cup to help with the transition. It doesn’t have a spout but it is spill proof. Not a sponsor, but if you want to check it out, here’s a link Miracle® 360° Cup – 10oz

Playing: I’m always playing Minecraft, it’s a life style. 😀 This past weekend I streamed with my brother, PilchPlays and we had a great time Saturday night when a Wither Boss got loose in our beautiful Nether Hub. It was a fun and intense fight. Watch it here! The fun begins around the 1:11:00 mark. PilchPlays YouTube.

That’s the Wither Boss about to blow Pilch (the face in the corner) away. ;P

79409Watching: There is a new series that’s airing on Crunchyroll right now called Bungo Stray Dogs, that I’m really enjoying. It’s about a group of supernaturally gifted people who tackle issues that the police or military can’t handle. From what I’ve discovered after some research, most of the characters are based on famous writers and their respective works or characters. Since the main characters are all Japanese, I don’t know any of them, but the concept really intrigues me. I’m three episodes in and I really like it. The humor is great, the animation is good and there is a healthy dose of violence. I’m excited to see where it goes.

Thanks for dropping by! Leave a comment telling me what your WoRd PoW is this week. Have a great week!

Welcome Back!

Hello friends and welcome back to Kricket’s Korner! It’s all shiny and new and has that new book smell of fresh ink and hot off the press pages.

I haven’t been back here since March of 2015 and a few things have happened in the last 10 months. Pretty much all good things, like buying our first house and moving to a new town.

Not much has changed in my writing life. I feel my writing has improved, but it’s hard to quantify that since I haven’t tried to get published yet. It’s an ongoing journey.

So, you might be asking your self, “Why have you come back to the blog Kricket?” Well, because I felt like it and I decided on a new focus for the blog. This blog is now going to be 90% reviews of books, TV shows, movies and other forms of story telling.

I love stories. I love consuming them and I love creating them. I want to share that love with you. The purpose of this blog is to create yet another little niche on the internet where we can talk about the things we love and find friends who share our interest.

Going forward I plan to post at least once a week, maybe more. It depends on how much time I have to read words or stare at screens. They’ll be lots of post in the next couple weeks, so look forward to that.

Thanks for stopping by! Be sure to share this if you like it and leave a comment to tell me what you’re currently reading or watching.

Let’s Start At The Very Beginning

Something new

A Very Good Place To Start 😉

It’s a new year and everyone is thinking about starting fresh. Last week, I shared what my writing goals are for this year, but in thinking about the future I also got to thinking about the past and the very beginning of my writing journey.

I wrote my first book in 6th grade. I think it was about 100 pages long and it was just awful. I was horrible at spelling back then and I’m not the sure the word processor I was using had spell check.

I was really into the Animorphs series at the time, so while my story wasn’t fan-fiction, it had a lot of similarities. The whole, “group of random kids/friends are visited by an alien and given super powers” thing.

Unfortunately, I lost the hard copy and I’m not sure it ever got transferred from one computer to another over the years, so I don’t remember everything. But, I and my pet hamster were in the story. My hamster could talk because she was actually an alien in disguise. Not sure why an intelligent alien would choose the form of a hamster, but there you go.

I also know that the boy I had a crush on at the time was in the story. He ended up faking his own suicide so that he could become a bad guy. I’m not really sure what that says about me at 12 years old, but there you have it.

I’m still pretty proud of that piece of work though, because I finished it. It was a solid story with a beginning, middle and end. That’s a big accomplishment for a 12 year old.

From then on I knew I wanted to write stories. I have a whole binder full of random ideas that I played around with throughout my teen age years. Some of them aren’t that bad, even now.

I even went through a phase of writing wonderfully angsty poetry. I like to say I was emo before it was cool. 😉

And then, as I got older and began to read more widely in fantasy and science fiction I realized that writing was more than fun and more than a hobby. I really wanted to create amazing worlds that readers could get lost in. I wanted to create those sensations in others that some of my favorite authors created in me.

So I’ve been doing this writing thing for 16 years now. Not published yet, but I have finished a couple manuscripts and learned a lot from my successes and failures. I might not be the most qualified person do have a blog about writing or to be doling out advice, but I’m going to do it anyway. 😉

And with that in mind I’d like to announce a new schedule of posts for the months to come. I’m going to continue posting every Wednesday and Friday and the pattern will go like this.

1st Wed. of the month: Project Update. I’ll talk about what I’m currently working on, what I’m struggling with or what’s going well. Stuff like that.

2nd Wed. of the month: Words From The Wise. I’ve read a lot of books about writing and most of them cover the same information, so I’m going to break some of the common stuff down for y’all.

3rd Wed. of the month: Grammar 101. Grammar is not my strong point, but I want to learn more and you can come along with me as we study The Elements of Style.

Last Wed. of the month: Story Time. I might have a flash fiction piece to share, or a longer short story, or some other type of writing. It’s good exercise for me and you’re welcome to tear it apart and critique it all you want.

Some months have 5 Wednesdays, so we’ll just make something up for those days.

And as always, Friday will continue to be Reviews. I’ll review book, movies, and animes, whatever I’m into at the moment.

So I hope you stick around with me for this great New Year! Please comment, and share and all of that. Have a Wonderful Wednesday and Go Write Something!

New Direction

New Direction

I literally just had to look up “new direction” to make sure it wasn’t a band name. It’s not, I was thinking of One Direction.

ANYWAY! Hi dear friends and readers. I’m doing it again, I’m changing things up. I really want to blog on a regular basis. Obviously, that hasn’t been happening. And I figured out why.

I didn’t have focus. My blog was all over the place. I was trying to cover everything in my life and it was just too much. I can’t even think about everything in my life without freaking out, so trying to write about it was just way too much.

So now I’m going to focus on one thing, writing. That’s my passion. Writing is what I want to do for the rest of my life. It’s what I want to be known for. Writing, story telling, is a part of me. Every time I’ve tried to deny it or my life has demanded I focus on other things, I’m miserable. But when I’m writing everything else just kind of falls into place.

Want to keep a Kricket happy? Keep her writing. 🙂

So that’s what we’re going to talk about from now on.

And now, excuse me while I go tinker with page layouts and such. 🙂 Have a Wonderful Wednesday!
